Subject:            My decision
Content-Type:  multipart/alternative;

No doubt some of you have already heard that I announced at yesterday's SALT meeting my decision not to seek renewal of my appointment as Director of Libraries at McGill.  After almost 40 years of commitment to the profession of librarianship in teaching, consulting, practice and management,  spanning several continents, I have decided it is time for a slower pace.

We have achieved much together in the McGill Library in the last four and a half years.  I thank each and every one of you for your contributions.

Our electronic collections have increased from 11,000 e-journal titles to over 40,000 e-journal titles (of which 10,000 are held back to volume 1) and over 2 million e-books, and entries are included in the catalogue to enable easy location and use.  We have also introduced online maps into the catalogue to help locate materials in the branch libraries.  We have introduced Endnote and provided training in the use of this very important reference management service, E-scholarship@McGill<mailto:E-scholarship@McGill> containing e-prints of articles published by McGill staff as well as Mcgill e-theses, lent IPods and laptops, provided an online reserve collection, enhanced our information skills and orientation programmers, improved links to departments through the liaison librarian programme, provided staff induction and increased opportunities for staff development, provided appropriate accommodation for staff and improved occupational health and safety conditions, extended our outreach activities through Homecoming and other activities, introduced a special service for alumni, produced professional brochures and posters to publicize our services, provided information screens in most branch libraries, improved communication through a staff newsletter and online staff updates, refurbished to some extent all branch libraries and several completely, leading to increased use, and extended our exhibition programmed.

New hardware has been acquired and software upgraded, and everyone trained in their use; common borrowing policies have been introduced; online chat and instant messaging have extended our responsiveness to user inquiries and website and search interface changes have enabled easier resource discovery.  Cataloguing backlogs have been reduced and improved processing speeded up availability of materials. The librarian Regulations were revised and approved.  New strategic directions have been set with the involvement of all library staff.  Responsibility and accountability have been emphasized through restructuring.  A DOD (Digitization on Demand) and POD (Print on Demand) programme has been introduced.  The Library is capitalizing on the new social networking tools and providing feedback mechanisms via services like Twitter.  We have worked with CREPUQ in particular, and other collaborative groups, to ensure that our combined efforts further the development of library services.

As a result of all of these initiatives and the continued provision of quality services, our performance in Libqual and the various benchmarking surveys like MacLean\'s  has improved markedly- our clients have liked what we have done and awarded us an A.

All of this has been made possible by the commitment of the members of SALT and of all the Library staff.    I thank each of you for the tremendous commitment you have made which have facilitated our many achievements.  McGill's teaching, learning and research outcomes have been enhanced by your efforts.  In particular I thank my personal staff, the staff of the Office of the Director of Libraries and the Associate Directors. The Principal and the Provost have been extremely supportive of the Library and provided the enhanced funds which have facilitated these improvements. To them I extend my gratitude, as well as to the Deans who represent our key client groups and who have provided considerable assistance.  Other support services from the rest of the University, including Teaching and Learning Services and the CIO\'s Office have also backed our efforts.

Much remains to be done and I look forward in my remaining time here to the continuing implementation of our Strategic Plan and the Workplace Values we have jointly developed.

Janine Schmidt,
Trenholme Director of Libraries
